Patterns in Powers of 10

WELCOME BACK! So this week I thought I would break out of my comfort zone and look into a math concept for out fifth-grade level students. I felt that the most important thing that our fifth-grade friends should really have a grasp of is the patterns in the powers of 10. What is that? This basically is finding connections with our ten powers. For instance, if we multiply 3x10 or 10x10x10, we would get an answer of 1,000, but we also know that when we are dealing with powers, we refer to the question as 10^3 (ten to the third power). Hello there, Welcome back! I am going to just jump right in with this weeks post. In elementary school one of my favorite topics were graphs, it was so much fun to see the visual representation of data even if its just silly data about favorite TV shows or sports teams. Kids love that stuff. I have found that children love to talk about themselves and to tell the world their likes. So this week I want to go back to second grade and to look at two types of graphs (I know there are more). We are going to look at Pictographs (picture graphs) and bar graphs. Hey guys, Welcome back! This week we are taking a dive into the first-grade common core standards, and I thought i would use my concept teaching game to help me out this week. With this whole time change a review of basics was needed, not sure why but this week I'm feeling fresh and new. So the topic this week is addition, more specifically addition of one-digit numbers. Even though we are looking more at the one digit side of the addition, these resources can be modified and used for two and maybe three-digit numbers. Weeeeelllllcomeee Back! So this week I thought we could go into a fourth-grade classroom.. it has been a long time since I have been in one. Maybe you have guessed it but the topic we are covering this week is time.  The Common Core Standards sticks time in the Measurement and data category so this standard states that students should: 4.MD.A.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. The topic of converting time also follows the same standard. So this week I heard a lot of songs that had round in the name, Flo Rida's Right round was one of them so this fantastic idea of covering rounding this week popped into my head. Rounding is a third-grade math topic, but to start let's get some fun music going. If we are starting with basics, our third-grade students should: "Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100." (CCSS  3.NBT.A. 1 ) Rounding is a life skill; I would like to think. It is needed as an estimate maybe one day you will be throwing a party, and 55 people say they are coming, but you want some extra food to be available so we would move it to the nearest tenth, making it 60 people. But what third grader is worried about hosting a party, to make it relatable you could make an example using, well honestly I'm not sure what third graders are into these days so that might have to be up to your discretion. Welcome back! I hope everyone has had a good week. For this weeks post I will be talking about first-grade math, but precisely, shapes. As silly as this may sound shapes are actually essential to know. Int first grade students are given the foundation and basic knowledge of shapes such as sides, classification, and the beginning of their geometry journey. The common core standards provide three standards to target when dealing with first-grade geometry: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. Money, Money, Money

Welcome Back! This week I decided to dive into the teaching of money. I am targeting second grade this week and how to teach them the concept of money. Money is going to be used in a person's everyday life, and teaching students the basics young will allow them to have more comfortability as they build on the concept. To children money might not seem like a big concept, they might need a few dollars to buy ice cream at lunch or to figure out how many books they can get with $20 at the book fair. Beginning with a refresher, helping students identify bills and coins and how much they are worth.  Here are some worksheets to refresh their money minds.
