Patterns in Powers of 10

WELCOME BACK! So this week I thought I would break out of my comfort zone and look into a math concept for out fifth-grade level students. I felt that the most important thing that our fifth-grade friends should really have a grasp of is the patterns in the powers of 10. What is that? This basically is finding connections with our ten powers. For instance, if we multiply 3x10 or 10x10x10, we would get an answer of 1,000, but we also know that when we are dealing with powers, we refer to the question as 10^3 (ten to the third power). Graphs (Picto&Bar)

Hello there, Welcome back! I am going to just jump right in with this weeks post. In elementary school one of my favorite topics were graphs, it was so much fun to see the visual representation of data even if its just silly data about favorite TV shows or sports teams. Kids love that stuff. I have found that children love to talk about themselves and to tell the world their likes. So this week I want to go back to second grade and to look at two types of graphs (I know there are more). We are going to look at Pictographs (picture graphs) and bar graphs. Here are the Common Core Standards that would be covered in this lesson: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes. Hey guys, Welcome back! This week we are taking a dive into the first-grade common core standards, and I thought i would use my concept teaching game to help me out this week. With this whole time change a review of basics was needed, not sure why but this week I'm feeling fresh and new. So the topic this week is addition, more specifically addition of one-digit numbers. Even though we are looking more at the one digit side of the addition, these resources can be modified and used for two and maybe three-digit numbers. What time is it?!

Weeeeelllllcomeee Back! So this week I thought we could go into a fourth-grade classroom.. it has been a long time since I have been in one. Maybe you have guessed it but the topic we are covering this week is time.  The Common Core Standards sticks time in the Measurement and data category so this standard states that students should: 4.MD.A.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. The topic of converting time also follows the same standard. We as educators can save time (haha) and teach these two together.  Time was a difficult thing for me, not the whole concept really but more trying to visualize it on an analog clock. with a lot of help and the use of only analog clocks for a while, i got better and...
